When I received a diagnosis of DCIS in 2010, I had never heard of it. I was 44, healthy, and had no symptoms or signs of anything wrong. Often called “stage zero” breast cancer, DCIS stands for Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. Although it is considered a “pre-cancer,” and most cases will never become a true invasive cancer, aggressive treatments are the “standard of care.” Intuitively, I felt something was not right, and I began to investigate.
DCIS is detected primarily through mammography screening and affects more than 60,000 women annually in the United States. Yet what most are never told is that research increasingly shows a significant portion of DCIS cases are overdiagnosed, meaning the cells found would never have progressed into life-threatening cancer.
The Holistic Health Path
After my diagnosis, I aligned with a proactive, holistic, mind-body-spirit approach to cancer prevention. On the Holistic Health section of DCIS 411, I share the evidence-based strategies and resources that guided my own journey — from anti-inflammatory eating to mindfulness to safe breast imaging. These are not fringe ideas. They are backed by science and embraced by integrative physicians worldwide.
Our mission is rooted in one powerful belief: women deserve facts, not fear.
BeWISE: Empowering the Next Generation
A new program based on our BeWISE framework — Women Informed, Supported, and Empowered — is specifically designed for young women ages 18 to 40. BeWISE was born from the urgent need to ensure women understand both the benefits and the documented harms of breast cancer screening before they are ever handed a mammogram referral.
Today, we are fortunate to have growing access to safer, radiation-free breast screening technologies such as QT Imaging and ABUS (automated breast ultrasound), options that DCIS 411 has long advocated for. Every woman deserves to know these options exist.
